New year, healthier smile
Looking for ways to improve your health and wellbeing this New Year? why not start with your oral health! Research indicates that dental problems can lead to serious health conditions including high blood pressure and heart disease.
At Carlton Dental, we are committed to helping you and your family achieve optimal oral health and wellbeing and healthy teeth and gums for life! See below as we share some of our top New Year resolutions for a healthier smile.
- Floss properly daily
Brushing your teeth is essential for good oral hygiene, but it’s simply not enough to keep your teeth completely healthy. Flossing removes food particles that are wedged between teeth, which are hard to remove with a toothbrush. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends everyone floss at least once a day.
It’s all in the technique
It’s one thing to make flossing a part of your dental health care routine, quite another to do it properly. Your dentist is the most qualified person to instruct you on flossing correctly but there are some basic tips you can follow:
Tip 1: Wind about 45cm of floss around your middle fingers and rest it across your thumbs and index fingers.
Tip 2: Always insert the floss gently using a gentle side-to-side motion to avoid traumatising the gums.
Tip 3: To clean the “neck” of the tooth, which is the point at which it meets the gums, curl the floss and insert it gently under the gum.
- Choose H20
Drinking plenty of water does more than keep your mouth refreshed. It also washes away food particles and bacteria that are responsible for tooth erosion and cavities. Consider swapping acidic or sugary beverages (e.g., sports drinks, fizzy drinks, fruit juice) with water to minimise the amount of acids and sugar your teeth encounter. Or, drink water in between these drinks and meals. Water containing fluoride is ideal for optimal oral health.
- Don’t delay dental treatment
Even the smallest crack or cavity can lead to serious dental complications. Treating small or minor tooth problems early can help you avoid considerable damage, as well as invasive (and costly) dental treatments in the future.
If you have been postponing dental treatment because of fear or anxiety, Carlton Dental offers patients a calm, and gentle experience that is sure to put at ease any anxious individuals.
- Schedule your routine check- up and clean
Routine dental check- ups and cleans help prevent dental health problems from occurring in the first place. In the case that there is a problem with your teeth, gums or mouth, your dentist can diagnose and treat it promptly. The ADA recommends both children and adults visit their dentist for a routine dental exam and cleaning every six months.
- Smile more!
Most of all smile! Studies show that the hidden benefits of smiling include everything from higher achievement and stress relief to a healthier immune system and greater ease making friends. So, show off your pearly whites and if you do want to improve your smile in any way, the team at Carlton Dental is here to help and can provide the most suitable treatment accordingly.
